Joey Powers

Joey Powers has been coming to Capital City Speedway since he was 6 months old to watch his father George Powers Jr. race, but he never sat behind the wheel until August 2005.  Joey has raced in the amateur and the stock heavy classes.  In 2006 he began racing the PRD TAG engines and found his calling.  In 2007 he won over half of the races he entered at Capital City Speedway and placed 4th in the VDKA series.  With the top 10 finish in the VDKA series Joey was invited to race at Thundervalley Motorplex in Neeses, SC for the 1st Annual Maxxis National Championship.  Joey placed 1st in the race and was name the PRD TAG Maxxis National Champion for 2007.  Racing is a family event for the Powers'.  Joey's wife, Tanya, works on tires and keeps the family (and other racers) feed during the long Saturdays.  Their son, Jay, has been racing in the Kid Kart class for 2 years.  His mother, Louise, has never missed a race and has always supported her family in the sport.

Sr. Champ Flathead Division
John Sharp
Reaching top speeds of 50 to 60 miles per hour, on a small dirt track, Go-Karting is certainly no sissy sport.  Richmond's John Sharp was paralyzed in a go-karting accident back in May of 1993.  For Sharp, there was no looking back and living a life of "woulda, coulda, shoulda's".  Instead, he found a way to get right back into the sport he loved.
With the help of his brother Walter Sharp, many dedicated supporters, and dear friends, such as Robert Johns and Bubba Glaze, owner of Bubba Glaze Racing Engines, Sharp returned to racing in 1996 in a "Champ Kart" equipped with a roll cage and designed to be driven with hand controls.
In 1997 he won the track championship at Capital City Speedway in Ashland, VA.  Since that time he has taken home a total of nine championships!  He has also twice won the title of "Senior Champ Driver of the Year".
When asked how he became interested in the sport of go-karting, John replied:  "my earlier days were focused on raising my family of three children.  Once they had reached adulthood, it was my time to have a little fun".  Amen brother.  Sharp, now 62 years young, is a grandfather.

In fact his 10 year old Grandson, Blaine Sharp, started racing last year in his own "Junior Champ Kart".  Earlier in 2007, John faced a new challenge.  While taking some practice laps at Capital City Speedway, John noticed he just didn't feel right and that he needed help.  After pulling into the pit area, he was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he had a heart attack.  After a "code blue" requiring chest paddles to resuscitate him, Sharp had heart surgery.  The first few days were touch and go; however he was released from the hospital a week later.  Of course on his trip home, the first place he wanted to visit was the race track to see his friends!  John has two go-karts, which allow him to race in three different classes.  He enjoys fishing and is an avid bowler who plays regularly with the "Sitting Ducks" at King Pins in Midlothian.
